  1. Create/Edit
    • How can I save a note?

      You can save a note by simply tapping the 'back' button.

    • How can I edit a saved note?

      There are three ways to turn 'edit mode' on in a note:

      • Tap the Pencil icon on the upper right corner in a note
      • Use the Edit icon in the menu
      • Double tap the word where you want to edit in a text note
    • Can I cancel the change made and go back to the previously saved status?

      The Revert icon in a menu allows you to cancel the change made before you save that change.

    • How can I copy (cut) and paste text?

      To copy (cut) and paste text, follow these steps

      • Text Note
        1. Turn Edit mode on and long tap the words you want to copy (cut).
        2. Choose 'Select word' or 'Select all' in the pop-up dialog and the selected part will be highlighted.
        3. Long tap the highlighted part and choose 'Copy (cut).'
        4. Long tap the location where you want to paste the word and choose 'Paste'.
      • Checklist
        1. Long tap the item you want to copy.
        2. Choose 'Copy to Clipboard' in the pop-up dialog.
        3. Long tap the location where you want to paste the item.
    • How can I check off the items on a checklist?

      Simply tap the item, and it will be checked off. Also you can uncheck by tapping the checked items. If you want to check or uncheck all items, use the List icon in the menu.

  2. Sort/Organize
    • How can I change the default sort order of notes?

      You can find 'Default notes sort order' option in Settings. Choose one among the five sort orders: by modified time, by created time, alphabetically, by color, by reminder time and Last used sort order.

    • Can I use multiple sort orders for sorting notes?

      When you sort notes by color, the notes grouped in a color also can be alphabetically sorted. Except for this, setting multiple sort orders is not allowed.

    • Can I change the order of the items in a checklist?

      The List icon in the menu enables you to choose the sort order of items. Also you can customize an order by dragging items up and down. Long tap the drop-down arrow on the left side of an item and move it up and down.
      *If you cannot drag items up and down, check if you have turned off 'List item drag and drop' in Settings.

    • Can I make the checked items automatically move to the bottom?

      Turn on the 'Auto sort by status' option in Settings.

    • How can I name a color group so that I can categorize notes with a color?

      To name a color group, follow these steps:

      1. Tap menu and choose the Color icon. Then the dialog displaying a variety of colors will pop up.
      2. Long press the color you want to name in the pop-up dialog.
      3. Type the name.
    • How can I search for a note?

      You can find for a note using a keyword. ColorNote will show you all the notes containing that keyword.

      1. Tap the Search icon in the upper bar of the workspace.
      2. Enter the keyword, and ColorNote will show you some of the notes containing that keyword.
      3. Complete the search by tapping the Search icon one more time. You will see all the notes containing the keyword.
    • How can I archive or unarchive a note?

      To archive (unarchive) a note, follow these steps:

      1. Open a note
      2. Tap menu and choose the Archive icon (Unarchive icon)
      3. Check Archive [Side menu - Archive]
    • Can I send a note to others?

      You can send a note to your friends via various tools such as SMS/MMS, email, messenger, SNS, etc. To send a note, follow these steps.

      1. Open a note
      2. Choose the Send icon from the menu
      3. Choose the method such as email, SMS/MMS or messenger. If the receiver also has ColorNote, it is better to choose 'Send as attachment' option which sends the note keeping its note format.
  3. View/Design
    • How can I change the way to display notes in a workspace?

      ColorNote has two ways to display a note collection: List view and Grid view. You can make your choice by tapping View icon in the menu.

    • How can I change a theme?

      Go to the side menu by tapping the Home button in the upper left corner of Workspace or Calendar. There you will find the Theme icon.

  4. Reminder/Calendar/Widget
    • How can I set a reminder on a note?

      To set a reminder on a note, follow these steps.

      1. Open the note on which you want to set a reminder.
      2. Tap the Reminder icon in the menu.
      3. Choose a reminder type from the following: 'All day', 'Time alarm' or 'Pin to status bar'. Or you can simply use 'Quick settings'.

      * If you want to set a reminder on a specific date and time, choose 'Time Alarm'.

    • Can I set the same reminder on a regular basis?

      Choose 'All day' or 'Time alarm' as a reminder type. Then you can set a frequency such as weekly, monthly or yearly.

    • How can I add a note on the calendar?

      To put a note on a calendar, follow these steps.

      1. Tap the date on a calendar
      2. Tap 'Add' in the pop-up dialog.
      3. Choose 'Text note' or 'Checklist'
      4. Once you create a note, the note will appear on the status bar on the date which you assigned it to.
    • Can I set a time reminder on a note created on a calendar?

      The menu of the note created on a calendar has the Calendar icon which lets you set a time reminder.

    • How can I put a sticky note on the home screen?

      You can put a sticky note using a widget. There are different ways to add widgets to the home screen depending on the device/android version. The following are examples of instructions for adding widgets.

      • Example 1
        1. Go to home screen
        2. Long press empty space
        3. Choose the "Widget" option
        4. Select the ColorNote widget in the list of widgets.
        5. Choose the note you want to make a sticky note.
      • Example 2
        1. Tap the All App icon on your home screen.
        2. Select the Widget tab at the top of the screen.
        3. Swipe the screen left and right to see the list of widgets.
        4. Once you find the ColorNote widget, long press and drag it to the home screen.
        5. Choose the note you want to make a sticky note.

      *You can resize the widget size if your Android OS is 4.0 or higher version.

    • How can I use the Today widget?

      The Today widget shows the list of the notes you assigned to a calendar. Let's say that you had made three notes on 30th January. If you create 'Today widget' on 30th January, it will show the list of those three notes.

    • A widget suddenly stopped working.

      There is a high possibility that ColorNote has been moved to SD card due to internal memory shortage. Since Android doesn't support the widget and reminder functions for the app on SD card, move ColorNote back to the device and reboot it.

  5. Master password
    • What is the master password used for?

      The master password is used for not only locking a note but also backing up a note to SD card. (To be specific, 'Auto backup' doesn't require the master password, while 'Manual backup' and 'Secured auto backup' require you to enter the master password.) Once you set the master password, you will be asked to enter it when unlocking or opening a locked note and also when restoring a note backed up with the master password.

      Make sure that you don't forget the master password. To prevent others from accessing your locked notes, ColorNote doesn't have the option to find the master password.

    • How can I lock a note with the master password?

      To lock a note, follow these steps.

      1. Long press the note you want to lock.
      2. Choose the 'Lock' option in the pop-up dialog.
      3. If you enter the master password, your note will be locked.

      Make sure that you don't forget your master password. If you forget it, you cannot open or unlock the notes.

    • I forgot my master password. Can I reset it?

      You can clear the current master password and set a new one.
      [Settings - Master Password - Menu button - Clear Password - Set a new password]
      Note that once you clear the current master password, the notes locked with it will be deleted for security reasons.

    • I forgot my master password. Can I open locked notes?

      You cannot open or unlock a locked note without the master password. ColorNote doesn't have the option to find the master password. This is to prevent others from accessing your locked notes. Even we cannot find your master password. ColorNote places heavy emphasis on security.

    • I forgot my master password used to back up notes to SD card. Can I restore my notes?

      You may be able to restore your notes with following methods, yet there still is a high possibility that you cannot restore the notes.

      To restore notes in the case where the device was changed, try one of the following three methods:

      • Restore the file that was automatically backed up, because auto backup would not require the master password unless you have set 'Secured auto backup' on the previous device.
      • Reset the master password and back up notes with the new password on the previous device. After moving the SD card of the previous device to the new device, restore the backup file you have just created. Note that if you had the notes locked with the old password, you will lose them.
      • Use online sync service. You can sign up for our online sync service on the previous device and sync notes to the new device.

      To restore notes in the case where the device was reset, try the method below.

      • Restore the file automatically that was backed up, because auto backup doesn't require the master password unless you have set 'Secured auto backup' before resetting the device.

  6. SD card Backup/Online sync service
    • Where are my notes backed up?

      Your notes will be automatically backed up to SD card of your device, unless you turn off 'Auto backup' option. Also you can manually back up notes to SD card. Furthermore, if you sign up for online sync service, the notes will be backed up to the cloud storage as well.

    • What is 'SD card backup'?

      It is the process of backing up notes to your device. The backup location in SD card is '/sdcard/data/colornote/backup' or '/mnt/sdcard/data/colornote/backup'

      • Auto backup

        Notes will be automatically backed up to SD card of your device, unless you turned off 'Auto backup'. If you want to protect your notes from others, you can choose 'Secured auto backup' so that notes are programmed to be backed up with the master password. The master password will be needed when restoring notes.

      • Manual backup

        You can manually back up notes as well. Manual backup requires the master password. [Menu- Back up - Create or enter the master password] Or [Settings - SD card backup - Tap Backup Notes button - Create or enter the master password]

    • What is ColorNote's online sync service?

      Online sync service allows you to sync notes across mobile devices. If you sign up for online sync service, your notes will be backed up to cloud storage. Then you can get access to your notes from other mobile devices. Therefore, you can easily transfer your notes to a new device when changing devices. Even when you lose a device, you can restore the notes backed up to the cloud storage.

      Currently we are looking into developing a web service so that you can access notes on your PC as well.

    • I signed up for online sync service with Google account (Facebook account). Are my notes be synced to Google (Facebook)?

      ColorNote's online sync service is not synchronized with Google (Facebook).

      The Google (Facebook) account is used only for authentication when signing into ColorNote. This feature lets you avoid having to create and remember a separate ID/password just for ColorNote.

    • I signed up for online sync service. Can I access my notes from a PC?

      Currently ColorNote online sync service supports only mobile devices. We are looking into developing a web service so that you can access notes online.

    • I changed devices. How can I restore the notes on the new device?

      You can transfer notes saved on the previous device to the new device using SD card backup or Online sync service. In particular, online sync service is recommended. Choose one method from the following four methods depending on your situation.

      • When you have the previous device + Using online sync. [Recommended]
        1. Sign up for online sync on the previous device. [Menu - Backup - Sign In] or [Settings- Online sync service - Sign up]
        2. Sync notes. [Menu - Sync]
        3. Check how many notes are synced [Menu - Settings - Online Sync - Synced notes]
        4. Sign in for online sync on the new device [Menu - Backup - Sign in] or [Settings- Online sync service-Sign in]
      • When you have the previous device + Using SD card backup
        1. Go to SD card backup screen on the previous device. [Menu - Backup - SD card backup] or [Settings- SD card backup]
        2. Back up Notes [Press Backup Notes button - Enter master password - Done]
        3. Move SD card from the previous device to the new device
        4. Go to SD card backup screen on the new device. [Menu - Backup - SD card backup] or [Settings- SD card backup]
        5. Tap the file you want to restore in the backup file list. Type the master password that you set when the backup file was created.
      • When you don't have the previous device + Using online sync
        1. If you had signed up online sync on the previous device, just sign in to online sync with the same account on the new device.
      • When you don't have the previous device + Using SD card backup
        1. Move SD card from the previous device to the new device
        2. Go to SD card backup screen on the new device. [Menu - Backup - SD card backup] or [Settings- SD card backup]
        3. Tap the file you want to restore in the backup file list. Type the master password that you set when the backup file was created.
    • I reset my device. How can I restore my notes?
      • Using online sync.
        1. If you had signed up for online sync before resetting your device, just sign in to online sync.
      • Using SD card backup
        1. Go to SD card backup screen. [Menu - Backup - SD card backup] or [Settings- SD card backup]
        2. Tap the file you want to restore in the backup file list. Enter the master password that you set when the backup file was created.
    • I cannot find 'Restore' option when tapping the backup file. There are only 'View 'and 'Delete' options.

      When you have signed in to online sync, ColorNote doesn't show Restore option. To restore notes backed up to SD card, follow these steps.

      1. Sign out of online sync service, and 'Restore' option will appear. [Settings - Online Sync - Menu -Sign out]
      2. Restore notes
      3. Sign in to online sync again.
    • I moved the SD card to a new device, but it doesn't show the backup file list.

      Your new device's SD card path is probably different from others. To restore files, copy the backup file to '/sdcard/data/colornote/backup' or '/mnt/sdcard/data/colornote/backup' using file manager app.

    • How can I sync notes between a phone and a tablet?

      To sync notes between a phone and a tablet, follow these steps.

      1. Sign up for online sync on your phone. [Menu - Backup - Sign Up] or [Settings- Online sync service -Sign Up]
      2. Sync notes on your phone
      3. Sign in to online sync on your tablet.
      4. Sync notes on your tablet.
    • Can I transfer my notes to other OS devices (iOS/Windows/Blackberry) besides Android?

      Currently ColorNote supports only Android. The only way to transfer notes to other OS devices is using 'email'. Send your notes to your email address and receive them on other OS devices.

      1. Open a note
      2. Choose Send icon in the menu
      3. Choose Email or Gmail in the pop-up dialog.
      4. Send notes to your email address
      5. Receive the email on your new device.
    • Can I restore only one note in a backup file rather than whole backup file?

      To restore one note from a backup file, follow these steps.

      1. Go to Settings and tap 'SD card backup' option.
      2. Choose one file from the backup file list
      3. Tap 'View' option in the pop-up dialog. It will show all the notes included in the backup file.
      4. Choose the note you want to restore. Type the master password that you set when the backup file was created.
    • Can I stop using online sync service?

      We recommend you keep using online sync service to make sure that you don't lose any notes. However, if you have to stop it for some reason, you can choose to disconnect online sync. [Settings - Online sync service - Menu - Disconnect]

      Note that once you disconnect online sync, your notes will no longer be backed up to cloud storage. Therefore, make sure that you back up notes to SD card.

  7. Auto link/Web search
    • What is Auto link function?

      Auto link functions are powerful tools that allow you to organize notes in a better structured way as well as to easily access the services you want.

      • Auto link phone number: You can directly call a phone number saved in a note.
      • Address link: You can check the location of an address saved in a note in a map.
      • Email link: You can send an email to an address saved in a note.
      • URL link: You can directly move to the website of a URL you saved in a note.
      • Note link/Auto link wiki word: You can link a note with another note. You can make a sub-note or a sub-checklist with these functions.
    • Can I assign a phone number format for auto phone number link or disable this function?

      ColorNote automatically recognizes numbers as phone numbers, which enables you to directly call by simply tapping the numbers on the note.
      But you can assign a certain format as a phone number or disable this feature in Settings. [Settings - Auto link -Auto link phone number]

    • How can I link a note with another note?

      There are two ways to link notes so that you can access a note from another note: Note link and Auto link wiki word.

      • Note link

        You can set up a hyperlink inside a note by using '[[note title]]' markup. Please refer to the example below.

        1. Let's say you have a note whose title is 'mynote'.
        2. Type [[mynote]] in another note and save it. And the word 'mynote' will turn into a hyperlink.
        3. Tap the hyperlink, and you will automatically move to the note 'mynote'.
      • Auto link wiki word

        Set up a hyperlink inside a note by simply typing the note title. You should use caps for the first letter and a middle letter of the note title. Please refer to the example below.

        1. Let's say you have a note whose title is 'mynote'.
        2. Type MyNote (MynOte/MyNOte) in another note, and it will turn into a hyperlink.
        3. Move to the note 'mynote' by simply tapping hyperlink.

        *If you cannot activate Note link and Auto link wiki word functions, please check if you have turned these functions off in Settings. [Settings - Auto link - Use note link or Auto link wiki word]

    • How can I use Address/Email/URL link?

      To activate auto link functions for address, email and URL, follow these steps.

      • Address link: Type the address (Standard address format) and save it. If you tap that address, you will move to that location in Google map.
      • Email link: Type the email address and save it. Tap the email address, and you will be able to use Email.
      • URL link: Tap the URL and save it. You can move to that URL by simply tapping it.
    • How can I use Auto link in a checklist?

      Tap the icons next to the items for using Auto link in a checklist. If you tap the items instead of the icons, the items will be checked off.

    • Can I make a sub-checklist (sub-note)?

      You can make a sub-note or a sub-checklist with 'Note link' or 'Auto link wiki word' functions. For instance, you can make a checklist 'A' and you can connect an item on 'A' with another checklist 'B'. Then 'B' will function as a sub-checklist of 'A'.

    • How can I search the web directly from a note?

      To search the web for a word you saved in a note, follow these steps.

      • Text note
        1. Long tap the word you need further information about. And the word will be highlighted and the Search icon will appear on the upper bar.
        2. Tap the Search icon
      • Checklist
        1. Long tap the word you need further information on.
        2. Choose 'Web Search' in the pop-up dialog.

      * The Web-search function in a text note is available on Android OS 4.0 or higher version.

  8. Others
    • ColorNote is forced to close. How can I open it?

      First, check if ColorNote is on SD card. As the app doesn't work properly from SD card, move the app to the device and reboot the device. FYI, the app automatically moves to SD card due to memory shortage.

      If ColorNote is not on the SD card, there might be a data problem in the device. Please uninstall and re-install ColorNote. And restore the notes backed up to SD card. (Before removing the app, check if your notes have been backed up to SD card using File manager app.) Or if you had signed up for online sync service, you can retrieve the notes from the cloud.

    • The app suddenly disappeared. How can I get back my notes?

      First, check if ColorNote is on SD card. As the app doesn't work properly from SD card, move the app to the device and reboot the device. FYI, the app automatically moves to SD card due to memory shortage.

      If ColorNote is not on the SD card, there might be a data problem in the device. Please uninstall and re-install ColorNote. And restore the notes backed up to SD card. (Before removing the app, check if your notes have been backed up to SD card using File manager app.) Or if you had signed up for online sync service, you can retrieve the notes from the cloud.

    • My notes suddenly disappeared. How can I get back my notes?

      Please check Archive. Change sort option from 'Archived' to 'All' and see if there are missing notes. If you cannot find notes in Archive, check a trash can. You can find Archive and trash can in side menu. Also search notes using 'search' button

      If you cannot find the note with the above methods, restore notes from SD card. Your notes would be automatically backed up to the SD card, unless you have turned off Auto backup in Settings.

    • Can I read a ColorNote note in other word processing programs?

      ColorNote notes are not readable in other programs. You can only open them in ColorNote.

    • Does ColorNote have the version for other OS besides android?

      Currently ColorNote supports only Android. But we have a plan to expand our service to other OSes such iOS.
